The 2010 Convention for Biological Diversity Target 1 asked countries to ensure “people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the solutions to conserve it. Yet, no analysis evaluated whether this happened and how different countries fared. We used Google search data to look what countries made progress in the last decade on these topics. We found that 29 countries managed to make progress on awareness of biodiversity and conservation solutions, and that these contain 35% of the planet's population. This works is evidence that much more effort is needed in the next decade to stem the extinction crisis and showcases how internet based indicators can be used to monitor our relationship with nature at a global level.
