Overview:

The Carson Water Subconservancy District (CWSD) is a unique multi-county, bi-state agency dedicated to establishing a balance between the needs of the communities within the Carson River Watershed and the function of the river system. 

The position will add an educational component to public events and tours to inspire our community to become more proactive and aware of watershed management issues, to conserve floodplains, and become more aware of their own contributions to nonpoint source pollutants. The member will have professional development opportunities through NDOT/FEMA/CWSD/NDEP/EPA on floodplain and watershed efforts.

Member Schedule & Service Location:

Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5pm, some weekends and evenings for special programs and events

Primary Responsibilities

Help Develop and Implement a Watershed-Literacy Multimedia Campaign

Enhance and Maintain our Educational Presence Through Social Media, Online Watershed Maps, and Newsletter Outreach

Implement Educational Component to Public Watershed Tours

Facilitate Schools, Agency and Nonprofit partners in Education and Outreach Events

Help Develop and Implement an Interactive Watershed Web Map Education Program

Help Develop and Implement Flood Awareness Week Education Programs

 

Secondary Responsibilities

Assist Conservation Districts and Cooperative Weed Management Area Education Programs

Participate in Stakeholder and Carson River Coalition Meetings, Collaborations and Communication

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Minimum one year of service as AmeriCorps Member

College degree with a focus and interest in biology, ecology, hydrology, geology, environmental science, human/public health, or related field.

Ability to work independently, collaboratively with other staff, and a diverse group of stakeholders.

Strong written and oral communication skills; strong computer and organizational skills.

Working Knowledge of Email, WordPress, MailChimp and Social Media Platforms - Working knowledge of the entire Microsoft Office Suite.

Some graphic design and layout aptitude.

Knowledge of the scientific method, strong data and statistical analysis skills.

Knowledge of watershed functions and fluvial processes.

Ability to hike through creeks and vegetation and be on your feet for up to 8 hours a day to perform tours, education events, monitoring and stream side restorations.

Willingness to occasionally work early in the morning (before 7:00A.M.), in the evening (after 6:00P.M.), and on weekends to participate in projects and events

Ability to drive for extended periods of time

 

Desired Qualifications

Experience leading groups in the field and/or teaching in a classroom or field setting.

Experience with on-the-ground restoration projects that involve the local community.  

Enjoys outreaching to adults and teaching K through 5th grade.

Some Spanish proficiency.

Enjoys outdoor recreation.

 

Terms of Service & Time Requirements:

Member's term of service begins on June 10th, 2019 and will be completed by August 16th, 2019. This is a full-time AmeriCorps member position. Members must complete 470 hours of service.

CWSD’s mission is to work within existing governmental frameworks to promote cooperative action for the watershed that crosses both agency and political boundaries. CWSD acts as lead agency for integrated watershed planning and funds the Carson River Watershed Coordination Program, who facilitates the Carson River Coalition. CWSD strives to involve all counties and communities within the watershed in the effort to meet the various future water needs, enhance the health of the river system, protect the floodplains, and provide outreach and information to the community.

 

Program Mission:

The Student Stewards Program engages K-12 students in park-based, citizen science projects that encourage higher learning in science subjects.

 

Member Benefits:

The AmeriCorps member will receive a living allowance of $4,159.68, and a $1,566.14 education award upon successful completion of service. Members will receive professional development opportunities throughout their service.
