Overview:

Work with native and non-native wildlife such as American alligators, snakes, turtles, amphibians, a variety of aquatic species, and non-releasable raptors. You will learn how to care for these animal ambassadors, maintain their habitats and life support systems, diagnose and repair equipment, and build aquatic life support systems. In addition, you will learn how to engage with and educate student groups and visitors while caring for and handling ambassador animals. 

The Conservancy's Nature Center houses over 125 species of local wildlife including marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and raptors. Participants in the 6- month Animal Husbandry internship program will gain experience in several fields such as husbandry, aquatic life support systems, animal enrichment, and education outreach. Through this internship, you will also gain extensive knowledge of Southwest Florida's unique ecosystems and assist the Conservancy. 

Work and Training Environment: 

  • An interest in caring for and handling (where appropriate) reptiles, raptors, invertebrates, amphibians, and fish.
  • Must be willing and able to handle non- venomous snakes. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Willing and able to work weekends, holidays, early mornings and evening shifts.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and work outdoors in hot, humid and sometimes buggy conditions. 

Education/Experience:

  • Applicant must possess a BS or BA in science and/or education. 
  • Environmental science/ecology, education or comparable background with a strong interest to work in nature center and interact with diverse audiences of all ages. 
  • Some animal care experience is required. 
  • Experience with aquarium maintenance and basic plumbing is a plus.
