POSITION DESCRIPTION

The education department at the Stroud Water Research Center is seeking an environmental education (EE) intern to assist in teaching stream study programs for schools and other groups and assisting with education grants focused on stream and watershed ecology (see Stroud Education Department webpages for more information about our education programs). The primary audience is K-12 students and most programs take place on the Stroud Center campus. There are occasional off-site venues. Additional potential programming includes outreach to audiences of all ages within the community, scout groups, family programs, etc. This is a 4-month internship and will tentatively begin February 6, 2017 and end May 27, 2017 (dates are somewhat negotiable). This is a full-time internship of 40 hours per week.  The typical work week is Monday-Friday but some evening and weekend programs are possible.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Program Delivery and Outreach Duties:

• Teach environmental education programs to a wide variety of audiences, primarily K-12 stream study programs. Instructional stations include macroinvertebrate bioassessment, water chemistry, sustainable building design tour, stream habitat assessment, stream and watershed ecology, and other topics designed and selected for school programs.
• Teach environmental education programs to Scout, youth groups, and other audiences.
• Staff exhibit tables at community events.
• Assist with training citizens on stream monitoring protocols and provide professional development to teachers and non-formal educators.
• Assist with other general department operations.

Education Grant Projects:

• Assist with data collection, organization, and analysis of grant projects.
• Assist with preparation for grant education, training, and outreach activities.

Internship Special Project:

• In discussions with education department leadership, identify and then lead one specific project that advances the goals of the education department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & JOB EXPECTATIONS

Education interns should have demonstrated experience, subject matter and educational knowledge, and be able to interact with participants of all ages and types in an engaging educational and professional manner. Our programs include leading hands-on activities, getting in and out of streams and walking and standing for long periods of time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants with undergraduate or associate degrees in PreK-12 teaching, environmental education/interpretation, environmental science, stream ecology, and similar degrees and prior work experiences in water education are preferred. Familiarization with instructional technology is also preferred.
