Overview:

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) seeks adaptable and engaging environmental educators to teach nature programs to school and community groups throughout the year. ALNC is a non-profit educational organization guided by Aldo Leopold’s land ethic, with a mission to engage and educate current and future generations, empowering them to respect, protect, and enjoy the natural world. ALNC serves more than 50,000 children, teachers, members, and families annually through year-round programming that includes field trips, camps, a nature preschool, and public and private events.

ALNC is an equal opportunity employer committed to building and serving a diverse staff and community. Individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups, in particular racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and multilingual applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Time Commitment

This is a part-time position with variable hours available each week depending on program bookings and educator availability. Hours per week may fluctuate between 0 and 20, with fall and spring being our busier seasons. Most programs take place Monday-Friday between 9:00am and 2:30pm and preferred applicants will be regularly available for this entire time frame 1 or more days a week. Additional opportunities may exist for afterschool hours.

Position Overview

The primary responsibility of this position is the planning and delivery of experiential nature programs for students in grades preK-8. Environmental educators are responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of the children in their care and are expected to facilitate a welcoming environment that is safe, inclusive, and fun for all participants.

Specific Job Duties

  • Teach nature-based field trip programs by adapting pre-written lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse school audiences.
  • Assist with the planning, prep, and implementation of full-day Vacation Day programs when local school districts are not in session.
  • Provide flex support across other program areas (preschool, afterschool, homeschool, etc.) as needed.
  • Arrive for scheduled shifts timely and consistently to ensure program needs are met.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will be able to manage a full schedule, work well in a team environment, and represent ALNC in a professional manner. Flexibility, initiative, the ability to problem solve, and a passion for working with children from all backgrounds is essential.

Required:

  • Experience working with children in formal and/or non-formal educational settings.
  • Respect, concern, and excitement for the natural environment and a demonstrated ability to share those things with others.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR. ALNC will pay for this certification if needed.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Successful candidates must pass a background check and fingerprint screen.

Preferred:

  • Degree in environmental education, education, natural science, or a related field. However, experience can supplant a degree, as ALNC values wisdom that may not come through a formal academic program.
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of regional flora and fauna.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Available several full days each week

Compensation

Starting pay is $14 to $16 per hour.
