Overview:
The Cahaba Environmental Center (CEC) is the flagship education program of the nonprofit Living River, a residential center nestled within a deep bend of the Cahaba River. The CEC, located in Montevallo, Alabama, is focused on inspiring students of all ages to become stewards of the natural world through hands-on, experiential environmental science programming. Our residential environmental education program offers students from schools across Alabama the opportunity to live and study for 3-5 days at our center, exploring standards-aligned content while utilizing the US’s fifth most ecologically diverse river and surrounding forest as a classroom and laboratory. In this unique environment, traditional classroom learning is brought to life through full immersion into, and hands-on exploration of, the natural world.
As a CEC environmental educator, you will have the opportunity to share the wonders of the natural world and create a sense of community with our participants! A CEC educator fosters a fun and safe learning environment for students and facilitates hands-on activities about topics such as watershed science, forest and stream ecology, Native American cultural history, and geologic processes. A CEC educator also leads evening programs including campfires and night hikes. During our fall season, there will be opportunity to take on independent projects that match educator talents and interests and support our educational program.
A CEC environmental educator must demonstrate enthusiasm, creativity, maturity, initiative, a sense of humor, flexibility, and team spirit! An educator shows passion for learning and teaching about the natural world and human cultural history. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Education, or related field. All educators must have current CPR and First Aid certification and undergo a background check. Preference will be given to those with prior experience in environmental education.
Compensation includes $275 per week and room and board. CEC educators will live in shared housing. Educators will have their own bedroom and share a bathroom with one other person. The CEC staff house will have a community living space, laundry facilitates, and a kitchen.
