Overview:
Coastal Institute Naturalists teach groups of 10-15 students about the ocean, the forest and everything in between, and lead off-site adventures that include tide pooling, hikes, kayaking, and beach walks. Responsibilities also include supervising mealtimes, leading camp activities, such as singing songs, performing skits, facilitating low ropes activities and target sports (archery and tomahawk throwing), and learning how to handle live raptors housed onsite.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in science, experiential education or related field and be willing to obtain CPR/first aid and CA Food Handlers certifications before start date. WFA/WFR, Lifeguard certification, Spanish language skills, raptor handling, kayaking experience, and at least one season of experience at a related program are preferred.
Our spring 2018 season will run from January 22nd through June 8th. Our full spring team will consist of six naturalists, one program coordinator, and the program director. At the time of this posting, we have three available Naturalist positions.
Compensation starts at $75/day, with the potential to earn $85/day by the end of one season, plus lodge-style housing (shared with 1-3 other staff) and meals when schools are onsite. When groups are not onsite, staff will have access to leftovers and use of the kitchen facilities.
Naturalists will get at least one week of paid training along with the option to attend a one-week UC California Naturalist certification course free of charge.
