Activities Along a Trail- Urban Forest Stewardship lens

We recently launched some online resources for local teachers to help them prepare for local park visits and guidance on how to keep things nature-friendly. As the same time, we're supporting them with some printable introductory activities, local nature knowledge resources, and curriculum connected resources on urban forestry topics to encourage self-directed inquiry projects.

We are hoping to add additional resources that focus on learning about shade trees, phenology, and mapping as well as other activity ideas that groups can do on-trail or near their school if there are limited natural areas.

With that.. what are your favourite nature-friendly and on-trail activities/projects/investigations for classes to do in parks? Activities shouldn't involve collection of natural items or involve leaving unnatural materials behind. Especially interested in engaging activities for grade 5-7s.

I like the GLOBE observer app for taking measurements while out in the park. I mostly use it for clouds, but there are also tree measurements, and the training/instructions are short and built into the app.

I have used PLT's free "Teaching with i-Tree." Students can measure the circumference of a tree and input that data to get a dollar figure on the ecosystem services that a tree provides. For info and free download, go to: https://www.plt.org/curriculum/teaching-with-itree/

Also, you can access the US Forest Service tree calculator directly at these two websites - first one is easier for younger students:
